Susana Monteagudo y Luis Demano. LITERA 2019
Si Beethoven pudiera escucharme. Ramón Gener. Now Books. 2015.

WATCH THE VIDEO "How do string instruments make a sound"
AFTER watching the video, complete the following activities ON YOUR NOTEBOOK and then send me a picture of your work.
1. COPY ON YOUR NOTEBOOK AND COMPLETE WITH THE RIGHT WORDS
The three parameters that determine the pitch of a vibrating string are the ………………, the …………. and the………………of the……………..
Thicker strings produce ……………… sounds than ………………..… strings.
Tighter strings produce ………………..sounds than ………………….. strings.
Longer strings produce ………………..sounds than………………….. strings.
2.READ THE FOLLOWING TEXT IN
ORDER TO LEARN HOW THE STRING INSTRUMENTS PRODUCE THE SOUND.
3.LOOK FOR THE WORDS YOU DON’T
KNOW.
4.WRITE THE TRANSLATION OF
THE TEXT ON YOUR NOTEBOOK. TRY NOT TO BE LITERAL
The String Section
The instruments of the string section are
crafted by carefully carving, shaping and gluing wood pieces together, and
covering them with several coats of varnish. No nails or screws are used at
all. Each instrument has four strings, the vibration of which makes the
instrument sound. String instruments come in many sizes: the larger the
instrument, the lower the sound, the smaller the instrument, the higher the
sound. They are very versatile because so many rich, lyrical (singing),
expressive and dramatic tones can be produced by them.
Sound is made on string instruments by playing
their strings in two ways. Usually, you draw a bow across them and sometimes you
pluck them.
Different
notes are made by using your finger to press a string against the fingerboard.
When the string vibrates at its full length, from the bridge to the pegbox,
the lowest sound is produced. When the vibrating length is shortened by
pressing a finger on a string against the fingerboard, a higher sound is
created because then the string is smaller (shorter).
Today we are going to continue with Unit 5: Musical Instruments Go to page 80 of your book, read it and underline the most important ideas. then write Activity number 2 on your notebook, just after your last homework. Then, watch the video (put the subtitles) and write down the following questions and their answers. When you finish, send me a photo of it to musicporcelos@gmail.com or mcorbi@educa.jcyl.es
ACTIVITIES
1. Write down the order in which the instruments appear in the video.
2. How many of them compose each group?
3. Is each group composed of different instruments? Which ones?
4. Can you guess what song is playing each group of instruments? Most of them are easy to identify. If you can not guess all of them, don't worry.
You can follow this example to answer:
3rd group: Clarinets section: One bass clarinet and 3 clarinets. The song is one ragtime song from Scott Joplin.
Today we are starting Unit 5, The Instruments of the Orchestra. Let´s start with a video of The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra. It is a 1946 musical composition by Benjamin Britten. It was based on the second movement "Rondeau" of the Abdelazer suite written by Henry Purcell in 1695. This is the main theme that Britten used to explain all the instruments of the orchestra.
At the beginning of the composition, the whole orchestra plays the main theme. Then, the different instruments present themselves to the audience.
Here is a version of the first part of that composition. After watching the video, here is what you have to do:
1. Go to your notebook and write the title: Unit 5, the instruments of the Orchestra
2nd title: The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra.
3. Write in which order do the different families of instruments appear in the video and what color is the shirt of the musicians.
4. Draw the sketch of the orchestra indicating the position of the main families of instruments: STRINGS, WOODWIND, BRASS, and PERCUSSION.
5. When you finish the work, make a picture of it and send it to me to musicporcelos@gmail.com
Hi, guys! I guess you are quite busy with all the homework... But that is better than being bored, isn´t it? Some of you sent to me the project about the musical instrument... It is not necessary to finish it this week... Take your time... What I want you to do today is to leave a comment (below) saying which instrument is the one you are going to work on, and how is it going. I wait for your feedback. Un abrazo
Queridos alumnos.
